Randy began the study of watercolor while in high school with Ralph Creager, a private teacher and member of the Ohio watercolor society. At the age of 17 Randy also attended the Dayton Art Institute to further study drawing and painting. Randy was accepted to the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), a private arts college founded by Walt Disney.

During his second year of college, Randy was hired to produce character art, new show development, and licensing art for Inspector Gadget and a vast number of shows in the D.I.C. Animation library. He was co-founder of Our House Animation, a company that developed new characters for animation and character licensing.
